According to a recent research published in the Medical Journal of Australia, approximately one-third of Australian workers have experienced negative effects from their co-worker's consumption of alcohol.

One such effect was that those surveyed had to work extra hours to cover for drinking counterparts in efforts that totaled an additional week each year at an annual cost to the nation of approximately US$430 million.

Lead author Michael Livingston of Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Center in Melbourne further cautioned, “While our estimate of the cost to co-workers of alcohol use by heavily drinking colleagues is large, it may represent the tip of the iceberg.”

Mr. Livingston went on to say that the costs of alcohol are multi-faceted, often resulting in reduced productivity at work because of impairment from the drinking as well as a reduced workforce due to absenteeism or even early death.

Mr. Livingston and colleagues at Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Center, we appreciate this in-depth assessment of alcohol’s additional tolls on society.

May such harmful substances soon be a thing of the past for the ultimate health and productive fulfillment of all.
