The Animal Welfare Amendment Act passed unanimously by New Zealand’s Parliament increases the maximum penalties that can be imposed for mistreatment of animals, with up to five-year sentences that can now be imposed, along with the doubling of fines for both individualsand companies.

The new measure also includes a broader definition of ill treatment and was commended by Agriculture Minister David Carter, who noted its demonstration of New Zealanders wanting stronger laws to protect animals from harm.
Kudos Your Excellency and New Zealand Parliamentarians alike.
May such commitment to improving the well-being of animals’ lives motivate many others around the world.
