Spanish researchers conducted a study showing that binge alcohol drinking adversely affects university students’ attention and working memory, with more attention required to complete given tasks as well as problems distinguishing relevant from irrelevant information.

Alberto Crego, doctoral student at Spain’s University of Santiago de Compostela, said, “One of the most relevant and worrying aspects of the high prevalence of intense consumption of alcohol in young people is the effect this drinking pattern … has on the structure and function of the still developing brain, and that these consequences may persist in the long term.”

Mr. Crego and colleagues, many thanks for this clear information warning of this harmful substance’s damage to our developing brains. May students be guided to make wise alcohol-free choices leading to fulfilling and productive lives.
