Supermarket meat commonly tainted with antibiotic-resistant strains of Salmonella - 24 Aug 2009

A recent article published in the New England Journal of Medicine outlined a sample testing of meat for Salmonella.

Of the 200 samples of ground chicken, beef, turkey, and pork purchased from three supermarkets in the Washington, DC area of the USA, 40 contained Salmonella. Of those, 84 percent of the Salmonella strains found were resistant to at least one antibiotic, while 53 percent were resistant to at least three antibiotics.

Salmonella is a major cause of food-borne illness often came from animal fecal contamination in the meat, causing intestinal symptoms and in extreme or untreatable cases, even death.

The study concluded by recommending an end to the excessive use of antibiotics in factory farmed animals raised for food.
