A recent report by the US Institute of Medicine and sponsored by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) evaluated 11 key studies on the second hand smoke effects of smoking bans on heart attack rates. Smokers and non-smokers alike showed a reduction after the implementation of the bans.

Professor Lynn Goldman of the Environmental Health Sciences department at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health said, “It's clear that smoking bans work.” while CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden stated, “Smoke-free laws are one of the most readily available and cost-effective methods for preventing heart attacks, heart disease-related illnesses, deaths and reducing healthcare costs.”

Bravo, Professor Goldman, Dr. Frieden and all participating researchers at the US Institute of Medicine and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for this clear finding of the health benefits of smoking bans. May all nations, cities and towns worldwide similarly act in ensuring the well-being of the public.
