Greenhouse gases from industrialized countries rise after 1990s drop, UN reports

UN reports rise in greenhouse gases emissions. Between 2000 and 2006, the greenhouse gas outputs of 40 industrialized countries rose by 2.3% over 1990 baseline levels, with those of economies-in-transition rising by 7.4% during the same period. This new information from the United Nations comes two weeks ahead of a climate change conference to be held in Poland and highlights the importance of arriving at an effective successor agreement to the expiring Kyoto Protocol.

Climate threatens the koala

Koalas challenged by climate change. Australian Dr. Dan Lunney, a senior New South Wales Government scientist says that the already vulnerable koala bears are facing further endangerment due to shrinking habitat through intensified bushfires, rising temperatures and drought. This, in turn, affects the species’ only food source, the eucalyptus, which in some areas is also losing its nutritional value as carbon dioxide levels increase.

Environmental damage causes further troubles in Kenya.

During this year’s rainy season, 40 people across the nation have perished thus far due to flooding and landslides, and overall 300,000 Kenyans have been affected. The lack of vegetation in many areas and resulting inability of the soil to absorb moisture has contributed to these disastrous conditions.
 
Dr John Nyangaga, an environmentalist and hydrologist at the University of Nairobi, has also stated that Kenyan rainfall patterns are now accumulated rather than evenly spread out, thus compounding the potential for floods. We pray for a restored balance for our Earth so that Kenyans and all people can live in peace and security. Let us all do our best to protect our environment and be aware of the significance of our every action.
