Mars was once home to lakes. New evidence reveals that the Martian surface was at one time both warmer and wetter, featuring lakes that have since evaporated. Mr. M. Ramy El Maarry of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research presented findings at the recent European Planetary Science Congress, saying that images revealed desiccation fissures on Mars’ surface.
These cracks, in the shape of polygons, resemble those found on Earth after a lake has dried up and are too large to have been caused by thermal expansion.
With evidence suggesting that around 4 billion years ago Mars was covered in significant amounts of water, Mr. El Maarry stated that the forces of evaporating liquid could have caused the drying features in the scale recently observed.

Rare black rhino born in South African reserve. South Africa's Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve is welcoming its first black rhino calf after two years of homing six of the endangered herbivores. The news of the baby’s June 1 birth was released only after he had enjoyed his first three-and-a-half month swith family in private.
As there are now just over 4,000 black rhinos remaining in the world, the fostering of this rare species and
the newborn calf are said to set a promising start.
