Italy writes law to protect animals on highways. - 26 May 2010

Under a new code recently passed by the nation’s Senate, motorists have an obligation to help injured animals on a roadway, with fines imposed for those who do not.

Additionally, motorists would be pardoned for disregarding certain highway codes during the critical time of transporting the animal for emergency veterinary care.

Originally proposed by such groups as the Italian Antivivisection League, the Parliamentary Intergrop on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals and others, the measure now requires only one more reading before the House to be passed into law.

Italian Antivivisection League President Gianluca Felicetti stated that this new article of highway code represents a significant advancement, as animals would be granted the same rights as humans in case of urgent help.
