Eight countries adopt pledge to protect elephants - 26 May 2011

Delegates from eight countries with the highest numbers of elephants - Botswana, Congo, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Thailand - meet for the first time in India to find ways to halt declining populations and to better protect these vital, gentle giants.

With an eight-millimeter sea level rise since the 1990s already being observed along Australia's west and far northern coasts, scientists state that further rises combined with erosion will cause coastlines to retreat 100 meters inland by the end of this century.
