A study led by Dr. Gina Lovasi of Columbia University in the USA and published in the American Journal of Epidemiology discovered that young children who are regularly exposed to tobacco smoke in their home environment can suffer permanent and irreversible lung damage leading to early emphysema in adulthood.

Because of the developing nature of the child’s physiology, the researchers found that the effects of the tobacco smoke could persist for decades, with the lungs never recovering fully from the early-life exposure.

Dr. Lovasi and fellow Columbia University scientists, our appreciation for letting us know how tobacco can irreparably harm children into their adult years.

Wishing family members everywhere smoke-free home environments for the optimal health of our precious youths.
