Unsold frozen chicken reprocessed with new expiry dates. Consumers in South Africa were shocked to recently discover that one of the largest suppliers of chicken meat in the country has been reprocessing old, unsold items for many years. According to former employees in the company’s management, tons of expired products over the years have been put on sale again with new expiry dates after being injected with a brine solution and rebranded, all without being scientifically tested for harmful bacteria or other micro-organisms. Charlene Goosen, senior dietician of the Nutrition Information Centre of the University of Stellenbosch said, “Contamination by microbial hazards can be harmful to humans, and viruses and bacteria pose the greatest safety challenges to food establishments.” Dr. Ingrid van Heerden of the publication Health24’s DietDoc also alerted, “Any frozen food, including meat, fish and chicken, should never be refrozen because this gives harmful microorganisms a chance to multiply and can cause food poisoning.”

We are thankful for the information that has brought this potentially lethal situation to light and pray for the safety of the South African people. May governments and food producers worldwide work toward delivering the safest and most nutritional food products, namely, wholesome plant-based fare.
