Surge in oral cancer blamed on alcohol consumption.

An increasing numbers of individuals in their 40s are developing mouth, lip and tongue cancer and, according to a British cancer prevention group, Cancer Research UK, alcohol consumption is the reason for the increase. Since the mid-1990s, oral cancer has increased by 28% among men in their 40s and 24% among women in the same age group. Cancer Research UK’s health information manager, Ms. Hazel Nunn, said that rising alcohol consumption since the 1950s was the reason for the increase in oral cancer while eating too few fruits and vegetables was also a factor. The latest research connecting alcohol with oral cancers has elicited calls for cans and bottles to carry health warnings similar to packages of cigarettes.
