REFUGEES
  • The United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) distributes food to approximately 20,000 displaced people in Yemen.
  • UNICEF assists 350,000 displaced people in the Democratic Republic of Congo with medical services, nutritional aid, temporary shelter and other goods.
  • The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) organized the return of 53 Liberian refugees to their homes with aid for smooth transition back to the community.
  • The UN, working together with the Rwandan government, organized the repatriation of 5,000 Rwanda refugees.
  • The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) provided aid to 366,000 Somalis who had to leave their homes.
  • The European Commission and UNICEF announce €20 million in assistance to eliminate Guinea Worm in nine districts in the northern region of Ghana.

  • The UN Environment Program and China collaborate to protect endangered species and the environment.
  • The UN Environment Program’s Indian Solar Loan Program is honored with the prestigious Energy Globe Award for financing the installation of thousands of photo-voltaic, solar-electric, home systems.
  • 35 million volunteers from 122 countries take part in cleaning up the planet during the UN Environmental Program’s annual Clean Up the World Weekend.
  • With barely 500 remaining in the wild, the UN Action Plan outlines the protection and recovery of endangered Mediterranean Monk Seals.
  • United Nations Environment Program’s (UNEP) Sasakwa Prize of $200,000 is awarded to Ms. Jeunesse Park and Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha for leading community efforts towards climate change.
  • The United Nations has launched a "virtual information exchange" forum for people and organizations interested in providing or receiving information to assist in eco-friendly development projects.
  • A UN Environment Program’s technical team partners with the Kenyan government to help protect mountain gorillas at Virunga National Park.

  • The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization issues its Livestock’s Long Shadow report showing that the international meat industry generates around 18% of the world's greenhouse-gas emissions, which is more than that of transportation.
HUMANITARIAN AID & RELIEF
  • UNICEF supports Bangladeshis with US$6 million, 10 mobile water treatment plants, over 100 tons of high protein biscuits, and other necessities after devastating floods.
  • UNICEF sends US$900,000 in aid to over 200,000 people affected by floods in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.
  • UNICEF distributes emergency relief materials such as water purification kits, temporary shelters, and mosquito nets to flood victims in Mozambique.
  • In the wake of Cyclone Yemyin, UNICEF supplies US$4.4 million in emergency aid to Pakistani floods victims.
  • The United Nations World Food Program purchased 4,000 metric tons of Afghan wheat, donating it to needy families within the country while placing US$1.1 million into the country’s economy.
  • UN provides aid to Maldives after floods, including ten water tanks, five rain-water harvesting kits, and long term efforts to restore people's livelihoods.
  • The United Nations pledges US$1 million in relief to help Peruvian earthquake victims.
  • The UN World Health Organization (WHO) provides Indonesian earthquake victims with medical supplies and communication equipment.

  • The UN Peace mission in Liberia rebuilds a key bridge linking the capital city, Monrovia, with neighboring Sierra Leone, allowing thousands of commuters to return to their normal lives.
  • UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process helps Syria and Israel resume to peace talks after a seven-year silence.
  • The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency confirms North Korea’s nuclear reactor has been dismantled.
  • Bangladeshi police receive the United Nations’ peace award for their service during the UN peacekeeping mission in the Ivory Coast.
  • United Nations designated September 21 the International Day of Peace to promote peace throughout the world.
  • The UN Election Observation Mission assists a smooth and peaceful presidential election in Sierra Leone.
  • The UN IAEA issued a report dispelling concerns about Iran’s nuclear development program.
  • The UN pledges funds to assist the Ivory Coast’s return to peace.
  • United Nations begins a 5-day Afghanistan fact-finding mission in early 2007 to improve the relief, support and the protection of people in the war-torn country and additionally access ongoing projects there.
  • UN commits 26,000 troops to peacekeeping mission in Sudan.

  • More than one hundred Indian policewomen serve in Liberia as the UN’s first, all-female peacekeeping unit.
  • In rural Liberia, the United Nations builds a police station with a special unit safeguarding women and children.
  • The United Nations negotiates a ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • The UN Security Council sets up a UN political mission to safeguard the peace agreement in Nepal.

  • UN-backed agencies help implement fifty-five projects in Myanmar over the past four years.
  • The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) launches a US$3.3-million program to help South Lebanese farmers resume their livelihoods.
  • The UN donates US$1 million worth of security equipment to Sierra Leone's police force.

CHILDREN (UNICEF)
  • The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) contributes US$340,000 to help children in need in Antique, a province of the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region.
  • The United Nations Children's Fund teamed up with the WHO, International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to vaccinate 16 million North Koreans against measles.
  • As part of a US$90 million project following the tsunami in Indonesia, UNICEF opened the first two of 370 permanent schools.
  • UNICEF provided emergency aid to help thousands of cholera victims in northern Iraq, and also launched a prevention campaign.
  • The United Nations immunizes two million children to prevent measles in southern Sudan.
  • The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) launch a US$44 million campaign to end female circumcision in sixteen African countries.
  • UNICEF, other agencies, and Ugandan government launch '"Go to School, Back to School, Stay in School" campaign to help communities across Uganda send girls and boys alike - to school.
  • UNICEF organized a train to deliver 300,000 mosquito nets to families in remote areas of the Republic of Congo.
  • UNICEF with €2 million funding from the European Union brings clean water and sanitation programs to thousands of residents of the semi-desert country of Djibouti in East Africa.
  • UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO), and the Afghan and Canadian governments team up to vaccinate 7.3 million Afghan children for polio.
  • The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Pakistani government sent rescue and relief supplies to southern Sindh and southwestern Balochistan for the flooding.

  • UNICEF-led campaign against watery diarrhea in Sudan is successful in reducing the number of cases of the sometimes fatal condition almost 90 per cent below last year’s figures.
  • The UN launches an Internet videogame that enables children to learn to respond to wildfires, tsunamis, floods, hurricanes and earthquakes.
  • All children with HIV/AIDS in the small West African country of Guinea-Bissau got access to anti-retroviral medicines, thanks to a UN-based campaign.
  • Almost 20,000 personnel set off on a five-day long house-to-house drive, with a goal of administering an oral polio vaccination to all 4.8 million Iraqi children.
  • Mothers and children in northern Sudan receive access to life-saving vaccines and other health-care services administered by the United Nations children’s agency, thanks to a $4.5 million grant contributed by Japan.
  • All 1,500 primary and secondary school teachers in Zimbabwe began to receive HIV and AIDs Lifeskills in-service training, with 500,000 students expected to benefit.
  • UNICEF builds 227 maternity and neo-natal clinics in Indonesia’s Aceh province.
  • UNICEF's talks with clan leaders in the Central African Republic (CAR) resulted in the safe release of 220 child soldiers.
  • A global campaign "Goals for Girls" was launched in Shanghai, China by UNICEF and the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
  • In collaboration with the government of Georgia, UNICEF distributed education materials, along with recreation, hygiene and sanitation supplies to juveniles in detention centres across Georgia where the children lived in poor.
  • UNICEF sends busses to help transfer 1,000 Palestinian children and teachers from a refugee camp in northern Lebanon to UN-sponsored schools at Tripoli, Lebanon.
  • UNICEF and Sudanese authorities place thousands of orphaned and vulnerable infants with alternative families to improve their health.
  • A campaign vital for child survival in economically unstable regions of Zimbabwe was launched by UNICEF with a goal of vaccinating 2 million children against polio.
  • Ugandan children who were orphaned as a result of AIDS received testing and consultation from UNICEF.
  • UNICEF supports the Ghana Education Service and Health Service to launch National Deworming Day on February 5 to administer essential medicine to all children in public elementary schools.
  • Eight thousand personnel set out to immunize the children of Iraq from measles.
  • UNICEF donated US$62,500 worth of supplies to help water quality testing to the Liberian government.                              
  • UNICEF teams up with the French Embassy in Liberia to donate US$389,000 worth of anti-malaria drugs to the government of Liberia.
  • In the Central African Republic, more than 70,000 children are provided with at least one meal a day by the UN in 201 primary schools and 20 nurseries.
  • UNICEF and Zimbabwe as well as 21 NGOs signed multi-million dollar partnership to provide 350,000 Zimbabwean orphans and vulnerable children with nutrition, health care and schooling.
  • UNICEF raised US$42 million for relief aid for Iraqi children.
