On Wednesday, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned that the cumulative effects of land degradation around the world now pose a real threat to food security for about 1.5 billion people. Director of FAO’s Land and Water Division, Parviz Koohafkan said, “The loss of biomass and soil organic matter releases carbon into the atmosphere and affects the quality of soil and its ability to hold water and nutrients.” The study indicated that these effects could be countered through improved land management practices.

Our appreciation FAO for this timely information. May your important warning help remind us of our responsibility as stewards of the Earth to help ensure global food security for all.
