European Parliament member Jens Holm has co-authored a report entitled “The Livestock Industry and Climate.” In it, Mr. Holm calls into question the practice of growing crops to feed livestock, especially since this contributes to the agricultural sector being one of the highest emitters of greenhouse gases. The report states: “Over a third of all grain harvested becomes (animal) fodder. Is that rational? Why not produce less meat and raise fewer animals on food crops, thereby freeing grain for feeding more people?”  The report concludes with two main suggestions for Sweden and Europe: first, to abolish meat subsidies so that the price at the store reflects its true environmental cost and secondly, to promote a modern vegetarian (vegan) diet.

Kudos, Mr. Jen Holm, for your sage analysis of our food crop situation and your timely suggestions to protect our irreplaceable planet. May all people make the planet-cooling switch to a vegetarian (vegan) diet.
