Bulgaria’s former leader and poet speaks on vegetarianism.

As a founding member of the democratic “Ecoglasnost” National Movement, longtime Parliament Member, Ambassador to India and Mongolia, newspaper editor and poet, Mr. Edvin Sugarev has been a steady and charismatic voice leading change.

Mr. Edvin Sugarev – Co-founder of Bulgarian Democratic Party, former Ambassador to Mongolia and India, Vegetarian (M): Unless everyone does something to change their consciousness so that we live in a more peaceful and a better balanced Earth, including also the care for the natural resources, I would say that this planet is taking a bad turn.

VOICE: In an interview with Supreme Master Television, we asked Mr. Sugarev, who is a vegetarian, to share his thoughts on this diet’s importance today.

Mr. Edvin Sugarev (M): Actually, producing meat requires a lot of resources. For example from water, big quantities are needed to make meat into an alimentary product, whereas that’s not the case with plants. So it’s no doubt that we save resources in this respect. And perhaps ecology will be one of the factors that will lead more people into preferring the vegetarian diet.

VOICE: Edvin Sugarev believes, however, that beyond the meat industry is a deeper question to be addressed.

Mr. Edvin Sugarev (M): To my mind this is the big problem, not only the meat industry, but the problem is mental, in the human’s way of thinking, and that’s what should be changed.

For me the most important is the person’s moral choice: Does he want to be an enemy of all living things on this planet; does he want to conquer everything so as to become a ruler, or does he want to live in harmony with this world respecting all other forms of life?

VOICE: We appreciate Mr. Sugarev’s thoughtful comments about the vegetarian diet. May more government leaders and citizens alike awaken to the planet-supporting benefits of this kinder way of life.

New Zealand glaciers set record low in total ice mass.

For 32 years, scientists at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research have been monitoring the 50 glaciers in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. Their most recent data shows that 2.2 billion metric tons of permanent ice disappeared from the glaciers between April 2007 and March 2008. Lead scientist Dr. Jim Salinger said that the main cause of the loss is global warming, and that this behavior is consistent with glaciers worldwide that are retreating.

Dr. Salinger and colleagues at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, we deeply appreciate this alarming but vital information on the state of New Zealand’s glaciers. Let us all act quickly to step more lightly and protect our magnificent planet from further effects of global warming.

Italy’s bees are disappearing.

Italy’s bee population has been observed to decline by 50 percent over the last few years, with eggs from queen bees also reduced in number. Beekeepers and experts have stated that the two probable causes are climate change and pesticides. Francesco Panella, President of the Italian Beekeepers Federation, said that the pesticides act on the insects’ nervous systems and affects their sense of direction. As a result, they cannot find their way back to their hives and eventually perish. The bees’ disappearance is also placing food production and the nation’s economy in jeopardy, for without bees to pollinate, fruits and vegetables cannot grow. The organization is thus seeking a temporary ban on pesticides for further evaluation.

Mr. Panella and Italy Beekeepers Federation, we thank you for informing the public about this dire situation. We pray that these signs from nature will awaken us to adopting more Earth-sustaining practices to protect the bees and all life.
