The spineless menace: Jellyfish overwhelm the sea

Jellyfish are now active year-round. Spain’s top jellyfish expert, Dr. Josep Maria Gili of Barcelona’s Institute of Marine Sciences, was part of the first program launched to track movements of jellyfish last November. Researchers were shocked to find the increase in jellyfish populations was far greater than anticipated. Dr. Gili states that the main causes are over-fishing, as well as fewer ice storms and unusually warmer seas, which create ideal breeding grounds for jellyfish. Dr. Gili, we thank you for your very valuable research. We pray for joint global efforts and God’s mercy in bringing about a rapid reversal to climate change.

Rubbish offers hope of meeting green energy targets

Britain generates electricity from trash. As part of its efforts to meet the European Commission’s new renewable energy goals, the United Kingdom plans to provide electricity from food wastes and farm slurry. This will be accomplished through the process of anaerobic digestion by bacteria, a technology already used in Austria, Denmark, and Germany. Hats off, United Kingdom! Your extra efforts in finding renewable energy sources are truly laudable. May we all be inspired toward such commitment to restore our planet to its original, pristine state.

Thank carbon for air cars

Air powered cars soon to be production-ready. France based MDI Industries has signed an agreement with Tata Motors of India to produce and market a car powered by Compressed Air Technology (CAT). The automobile operates on either mono or dual energy, one using compressed air only and the other with a hydrocarbon fuel burner to heat the air for more power. Able to achieve speeds of up to 68 miles per hour, the vehicle will be able to travel between 62 and 500 miles on a single tank, depending on the engine type. Our deep appreciation, Tata Motors and MDI Industries for bringing this brilliant advancement in transportation technology to the public! May your research and production endeavors come to profitable fruition soon to provide an environmentally-friendly means of traveling.

New game: Save the planet, fall in love with math

IBM develops educational online game for kids. The free online game PowerOn encourages development of math and science skills by giving young people a fun opportunity to use them. The game’s characters are engineers who must develop ecological power generation technologies such as solar and wind to save Helios, a virtual 3D world, from environmental disaster. PowerOn, which can be played alone or in groups, thus helps young students advance academically while raising awareness about climate change. Way to Go, IBM! May the young players of your game go on to help save the environment in the real world!

Swiss shoppers given more green choices

Swiss markets offer more green options. Migros and Coops, two supermarket chains in Switzerland, are developing ways to give consumers more choices on climate-friendly products. Migros plans to label laundry detergents that cause the least damage to the environment based on the condition of how the raw materials are obtained, produced, transported, disposed and whether they are biodegradable. Coop, another chain store, will declare which products are delivered by ship instead of by air, which is the best way to inform consumers of the products’ ecological impact. That’s what we call excellent customer service, Swiss markets. Thank you for offering green choices to your loyal patrons!

China announces "green insurance" plan.

China announces "green insurance" plan. China’s State Environmental Protection Administration and the China Insurance Regulatory Commission have unveiled a plan for all industries with pollution risks to have insurance by the year 2015. In the case of a serious environmental accident, the insurance would facilitate prompt compensation to victims. The “green insurance” will also lighten the financial burden on the government which, in the past, has often had to pay for clean-ups when the polluting companies filed bankruptcy after an accident. A respectful salute to China for this great idea of green insurance. May all your policies to protect and safeguard our irreplaceable home meet with flourishing success.

New environment protection facilities planned at Three Gorges dam

China preserves the environment at the Three Gorges dam. As the Three Gorges Dam heads toward completion, China has announced additional facilities that will be established for environmental protection. Facilities include a new Yingzizui water plant and a Letianxi waste water processing factory to handle silt, algae blooms, landslides, and other environmental issues. Director Li said that the project is committed to the highest standards in building, operating and managing the world's largest hydro-power plant. Kudos and many thanks, China, for ensuring environmental protection along with technological advances. May Heaven bless your nation with evermore prosperity and sustainability.
