Following a diagnosis of E. coli in seven customers who had all fallen ill after eating at a restaurant known for its beef dishes in Hawaii, USA, four of the stricken had to be hospitalized and officials ordered the restaurant temporarily closed.

This dangerous variant of E. coli is a bacterial germ that inhabits the intestinal tract of ruminant animals such as cattle and often contaminates meat during the slaughtering process, spreading the pathogen to humans.

Although rare, E. coli infection can cause permanent kidney failure and even death in vulnerable persons. Our thanks Hawaii health officials, for your swift actions to protect public health.

May humans everywhere soon enjoy sustained vitality through the wise choice of plant-based fare.
