USDA issues first ever beef recall due to salmonella.

Stores across seven states of a US grocery chain are responding to a Department of Agriculture (USDA) recall of 466,236 pounds of ground beef sold over a one-month period that have caused 14 Colorado residents to fall ill with a drug resistant strain of salmonellosis, six of whom have been hospitalized.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Salmonella is usually transmitted by eating foods contaminated with animal feces and can be fatal. Colorado Department of Public Health epidemiologist Dr. Alicia Cronquist explained that for each officially reported case of salmonella, 38 more are likely to be infected.

Many thanks, Dr. Cronquist, US Department of Agriculture and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for your efforts to protect public health. May notifications such as these prompt us all to consider the safer and more healthy choice of the plant-based diet.
