After thousands of child cases of lead poisoning were diagnosed in 2010, officials shut down battery-producing plants in several Chinese provinces pending safety inspections when hundreds more people were found to have high lead levels, with 53 hospitalized for toxicity risks that include nervous, muscular and reproductive system damage.
