While participating in a free diving contest at Polar Land theme park in Harbin, northeast China, Yang Yun found her legs suddenly paralyzed by the Arctic waters when she tried to swim back up after a dive.

The 26-year-old said, "I thought that was it for me – (that) I was dead, until I felt this incredible force under me driving me to the surface."

It was Mila, a Beluga whale, who saw what happened and swam toward Yun, then clasped the young woman’s legs gently within her own jaws and hoisted her to the surface.

One of the organizers said of Mila, "She's a sensitive animal who works closely with humans and I think this girl owes her, her life."

Our salute of admiration, Mila for your heroic and life-saving actions! And thank you for reminding us of the blessing we have in beings like you who safe-keep lives, love and peace under water.
