Former soldiers for the New Forces Group in Côte d'Ivoire have begun to receive payments that represent support agreed in a 2007 peace accord, as they relinquish their arms and return to peaceful civilian life.

Spokesperson for the demobilization program, Mr. Karna Soro, indicated that some 4,000 persons in the region of Korogho would receive payments in the coming days, with other areas following.

Expressing the relief of group members at this peaceful conclusion, he stated, “There is a real feeling of joy for us.” The disarmament effort also includes the former soldiers becoming employed in various government projects, all coming ahead of elections slated for October 31. Our sincere accolades, all parties, and best wishes for harmonious new beginnings in Côte d'Ivoire. May the country and her beautiful people continue to progress towards ever more stability, prosperity and peace.
