Lona, Southerner (F): There is freedom from today in southern Sudan, we are so happy. I can’t even express myself. I danced, I smiled…

Enna Adieng, Southerner (F): Today, I reached the dream, I reached the end of my dream. Today, I am happy to gain back my country. I am happy, after 55 years, I have been dreaming and today is the day we that gained back, we bring back our country. We are going to be set free, we are free now.

VOICE: Sudanese people vote for Southern Sudan’s independence. Election results have revealed that over 99% of voters in Southern Sudan and 77% in the north have opted for the creation of an independent state. Monitored by 20,000 international observers and 1,000 journalists, the outcome of the peaceful election also fulfils a condition of the 2005 accord that ended years of previous conflict between the two regions. With a panel that has decided on the name of South Sudan for the country, many who had left some years ago have already begun returning to help rebuild.

Our congratulations, Sudanese people, for your constructive and harmonious vote. As your governments engage in mutually beneficial relations, may happiness and prosperity prevail across the land.
