국가들이 동식물 보호 목표를 달성하지 못함에 따라 생태계는 영구 손상으로 나아갈 수 있다. (유엔환경계획, 2010)
- 최대 270개의 고유 종들이 매일 사라지고 있다.
- 일부 전문가들에 의하면 지구는 기후변화 뿐 아니라 주로 인간이 유발한 기타 요인들로 인해 “6번째 대멸종”이 진행 중이라고 한다.
- 전세계 평균기온 상승이 약 섭씨 3.5도를 초과하면, 전세계 종의 70%가 멸종될 수 있다. (IPCC)
기후변화 피해를 입은 생물종에 대한 2010년 신규 보고서:
- 바다의 얼음이 사라져서 남극 펭귄 개체수가 1975년 이후로 80% 이상 감소했다.
- 기후변화로 인해 때이른 해빙과 혹한이 반복되면서 식물성 먹거리를 얻을 수 없게 된 북극순록이 기아로 개체수가 급격히 감소하고 있다.
- 2007년과 2009년에 이어 2010년 9월에도, 바다 코끼리의 일상적인 휴식처인 바다 얼음이 부족해져서 수만 마리의 바다 코끼리들이 해안으로 몰려오는 이상행동을 보였다.
- 철새들이 죽어가고 있다. 부적절한 시기에 이동함에 따라, 도착지에 식량이 부족하거나 철새들에게 서식지를 제공하던 습지가 말라버렸기 때문이다.
