1. 기후 난민
- 기후난민은 대략 2천5백만에서 3천만 명으로 추산되고 있다. 2050년에는 2억에서 10억의 기후난민이 발생할 수 있다.
- 네팔에 생긴 최초의 “기후난민촌” 주민 150명은 기후변화로 초래된 물 부족 사태로 인해 새로운 정착지로 다시 이주하고 있다. (2010년 7월)
2. 충돌
- 미국의 정보기관은 지구온난화를 심각한 안보 위협으로 간주하고 있다. 미국의 일급 정보분석가인 토마스 핑거(Thomas Finger)는 머지않아 홍수와 가뭄이 전세계적으로 발생하여 대규모 이주와 혼란을 야기할 것이라고 지적했다. (2010)
- 다르푸르 분쟁의 주원인은 바로 지구온난화임이 입증되었다. (Atlantic Monthly, 2007)
3. 질병
- 기온상승은 말라리아의 확산과 청설병 바이러스, 웨스트 나일 바이러스, 뎅기열과 여러 가지 많은 질병들을 일으키고 있는데, 이런 질병들에 노출된 적이 없는 새로운 대륙이나 고지대 지방의 수백만 명에게 감염되고 있다.
- 기후변화는 2080년경에 4억 명의 말라리아 환자를 추가로 발생시킬 수 있다. (UN)
- 기후변화로 인해 천식 같은 호흡기 질환이나 재난과 관련된 정신질환도 더 늘어날 것으로 예상된다.
4. 인명 손실
- 기후변화 재난으로 이미 31만 5천명이 매년 사망하고 있고, 3억 2천 5백만 명이 심각한 피해를 입고 있다. (Global Humanitarian Forum , 2009)
5. 식량 부족
- 세계 인구의 절반이 금세기 내에 심각한 식량 부족 사태에 직면할 것이다. (University of Washington 연구팀, Science, 2009)
- 러시아, 독일, 캐나다, 아르헨티나, 호주, 우크라이나, 파키스탄 등지에서 홍수나 가뭄으로 인한 수확량 손실이 이미 일어나고 있다. (2010년 9월)
- 식량 가격이 2010년8월에 전세계적으로 5% 인상되었다. 모잠비크에서는 빵 가격 인상으로 식량폭동이 일어나 10명의 사망자와 3백 명의 부상자가 발생했다. (2010년 9월)
- 식량가격 인상이 2008년에 전세계적인 식량폭동을 유발시켰는데, 이것은 중국과 인도의 인구를 위한 동물사료의 수요 증가와 기후 변화가 겹쳐 일어난 현상이다. (유엔 세계식량계획)
- 기아로 고통 받는 인구가 2009년 처음으로 10억을 넘어섰다.
- 기아와 영양실조로 9백만이 넘는 세계 인구가 매년 죽어가고 있다. 그 중 5백만 명이 어린이들이다.
6. 물 부족
- 세계의 강들이 전지구적으로 “위기상황”에 처해 있다. 세계 인구의 거의 80%가 물 부족 사태로부터 위협을 받고 있다. 조사된 바에 따르면 수원의 거의 3분의 1이 생물다양성 손실로부터도 심각한 위협을 받고 있다. (US researchers Professor Peter McIntyre of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and City College of New York modeler Charles Vörösmarty)
- 물 부족에 대한 최근의 지역별 보고서:
- 중동지역의 물 공급량은 1960년대의 4분의 1 수준으로 떨어졌다. (Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED), 2010) 티그리스와 유프라테스 강의 유량은 가뭄으로 정상수량의 3분의 1 미만으로 줄어들었다. (UN Inter-Agency Information and Analysis Unit (IAU))
- 영국의 여름이 점점 더 덥고 건조해지는데, 이렇게 되면 하천 유량의 80%가 감소하면서 극심한 물 부족 사태를 야기할 수 있다. (Britain’s Government Office for Science, 2010)
- 세계 인구의 절반에 공급되는 우물의 지하수원이 말라가고 있다. (Lance Endersbee, Monasy University, Australia)
- 11억 인구가 안심하고 마실 수 있는 물이 부족하다. (세계보건기구, 2005)
